The Afterlife Convention Speakers

ELISA MEDHUS, M.D. is the author of the forthcoming Simon & Schuster book, “My Son and the Afterlife: Conversations with the Other Side” (coming Oct. 1). Medhus is a former skeptic who chronicles her journey to belief. Raised by two atheists, she suffered a tragedy when her son, Erik, committed suicide.

Shortly after his death, Erik began visiting friends, family and Medhus herself by turning on faucets and deadbolts, dropping Airsoft BBs from the ceiling, making unplugged appliances work, calling on the telephone and much more.

To vent her grief, Medhus created a blog, “Channeling Erik.” Soon, Erik began visiting blog members, materializing before them and playing all sorts of pranks. With one reader, he fills his car with the smell of pot every time he passes a police station. With a woman, every time she goes out for a job, she comes back to a kitchen with all of the drawers open.

As the blog evolved, Erik began to share his insight on death, the afterlife and the human experience via a wonderful medium, Jamie Butler. Medhus notes, “He curses and drops F-bombs a lot, so it took some time for her embarrassment to subside. But the chemistry between them is full of love and humor. After a lot of obstacles in the road, I am finally a believer.”
